Determination antimicrobial resistance profile of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from hospitalized patients in Taleghani Hospital (Ahvaz, Iran) from 2011-2012
Authors
Abstract:
Background & Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative, glucose-nonfermenting aerobic bacterium. It is widespread in natural environments and it is an opportunistic pathogen for humans that can lead to a broad spectrum of disease such as urinary, burn, respiratory infections, and septicemia. The aim of this study was to determe antibiotic resistance profile of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from hospitalized patients in Taleghani hospital (Ahvaz, Iran). Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 111 P. aeruginosa strains isolated from hospitalized patients. Clinical specimens were cultured on microbiological media. Subsequently, drug susceptibility test was performed using the disc diffusion method according to CLSI recommendations. Results: The more P. aeruginosa strains were from wound specimens (48.6%). In antimicrobial susceptibility testing, colistin exhibited the greatest anti-Pseudomonas activity (78.3%). Isolates demonstrated resistance to beta-lactam antimicrobials such as antipseudomonal penicillins, including piperacillin and carbenicillin. Conclusion: The spread of these bacteria in hospital personnel and wet areas could be a suitable reservoir of resistance genes. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance profile and the effect of hospital equipment and personnel in the dissemination route of resistance genes.

Antimicrobial Resistance Profile of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strains
Abstract Background and Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common organism, which is separated from the burn infections. Due to increased antibiotic resistance, there are many problems to deal with the infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study aimed to determine the resistance to antibiotics against clinical isolates of Pseudomonas using phenotype me...

Background and purpose: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen and the second leading cause of nosocomial infections, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU), and is responsible for high mortality rates. The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of antibiotic susceptibility and prevalence of multiple drug resistance strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from hospitalized p...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading cause of bum infections, and antibiotic- resistant strains of this bacterium are emerging due to extensive application of antibiotics in the bum unit of hospitals. In this study 50 strains of P. aeruginosa were isolated from bum patients infected with this micro-organism in the bum unit of a general hospital in Kerman, Iran over one year [May 1999-ApriI20...

Staphylococcus aureus is a major bacterial pathogen that causes different community- and hospital-acquired infections. Over time, strains of S. aureus have become resistant to different antibiotics including penicillinase-resistant penicillins. Having data on the local antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of this pathogen is necessary for selection of appropriate...

Klebsiella, a bacterial genre which includes species frequent involved in human pathology, produces a wide range of infections, sometimes severe and difficult to treat. Our retrospective study was made in the Clinical County Emergency Hospital of Braşov and included the Klebsiella strains isolated from various pathological products of the patients hospitalized in 2010. The study shows the wide ...

Aim: In this study, we evaluated the presence of antibiotic resistance genes among P. aeruginosa strains. Methodology: From January to September 2012, 100 isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected from burn patients. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion method. Screening for Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) productions were performed by Combination Disk Diffusion Test ...
